Also, one of Florida’s early tourist attractions, Dupree Gardens called the area home, but it was not yet named Land O’ Lakes at that time. The schools in the area are run by the Pasco County School District. There are two high schools, two middle schools, seven elementary schools, two charter schools and two private schools. If you love the outdoors, you’ll find two beautiful Preserves in Land O’ Lakes — Conner Preserve and Cypress Creek Preserve. The parks include many miles of nature trails and you’re likely to see a variety of wildlife, including woodpeckers, wild pigs, armadillo and tortoise. The area has a population of over 14,000 residents. Nearly 30% are under the age of 18, 5.6% are 18 to 24 and 35.7% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 6.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. Population growth exploded after the 2000’s, with population increasing over 700%, from less than 2,000 people to over 14,000 residents.

In the 1960s an influx of people, to the once rural community, made the “Lutz Junction” expendable and it was demolished in 1960. But in a tip of the cap to its proud beginnings, a replica of the depot was rebuilt at the intersection of Lutz-Lake Fern Rd. and U.S. Highway 41 in what is known as “Beautiful Downtown Lutz.” Lutz is also known as the “Cactus Hat” due to an unexplainable abundance of Cleistocactus that began sprouting in 2003. Although most of Lutz lies in Hillsborough Country, a section is located north in nearby southern Pasco County. This area is also called Lutz, but many refer to it as Pasco Lutz. Commute time from the area to Tampa is about 30 minutes.
Lutz’s 20,000 residents are divided into more than 6,300 households. Over 75 percent of the households are made up of families and 36 percent have children under the age of 18. Married couples comprise 64 percent of the households. Lutz is primarily in the Hillsborough County Public School system. It has four elementary schools, three middle schools. It is also served by three high schools.

Over 26 percent of the population is under 18 years of age, while close to 27 percent are ages 18 to 24. Just under 50 percent of Ruskin residents are 25 and older. The median age for the community is 35 years of age.
Cockroach Bay Preserve and State Park is a 617-acre state park, south of the Little Manatee River. The park is made up of over 500 acres of mangrove swamp and attracts both fishermen and bird watchers. It also has a public boat ramp.
